BRILLIANT Bug Posters

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

Room 14 have done some amazing inquiry projects about things in the garden.

Some group comments about making our posters:

"It took a lot of knowledge and detail to make these posters but it was a lot of fun"
Frankie, Abi & Olivia
"It is good to learn about bugs"
Austin, Harry & Ben
"Everyone in our class made a bug poster which had 3 questions and a picture"
Charlie, James & Eamon
"When we first started we were looking forward to finding out more!"
Scarlett, Rishma & Janette
"It was great fun making these posters. We smiled the whole time and ended up with brilliant fun posters"
Bella, Ellie & Zara
"We made a brilliant bug poster and had to answer three questions"
Emery Cairo and Maz

Some of our most interesting discoveries we made during the inquiry process:

  • Even without eyes a worm can still sense light and move away from it.
  • Some female stick insects eat the males.
  • A worms diet is based on where it lives.
  • A tree could grow up to 320 feet high!
  • Ladybugs can eat up to 5000 aphids in its lifetime!
  • Worms can be really long, big and fat so it looks like a hose!
  • I learnt how trees leaves change colour in autumn.
  • I found out that worms aren't pink but they are red because they are red blooded.
  • I found out how apple seeds grow into apples.
  • Worms hide in the ground to hide from their natural predators.

Manu Tukutuku

The maori kite is known as Manu tukutuku. Manu means both kite and bird and the word tukutuku is talking about the winding out of the line as the kite climbs upwards into the sky. They were flown for fun but also had other uses... Thanks for the AWESOME research Abi, Zara and Ellie.

We made Manu taratahi (this means single-pointed). They had a triangular shape as their base. They are usually made of toe toe, harakeke cord and raupo slats. We used rolled up newspapers, string and cardboard! We did try to fly them but knew they were really just decorative kites! The koru patterns on our slats were fantastic! These were a great co-operative activity.

Measuring WITHOUT a ruler!

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

We have been learning about measurement. We thought if we didn't have a ruler we could use something else to measure with so we created our own measuring objects. It was so much fun to try to measure something with a pancake! Or a snail!
But we found out that we didn't all get the same answer when we measured using different things. A ruler will give a more accurate answer... but isn't quite as much fun!

We love LION!

Match the constellations!

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

MATARIKI is coming soon! It was fun making different poses and then turning them into our own constellations by tracing our bodies and putting stars in some places. We think they look awesome. They are all on the roof in our class and look just like a real night sky. Why not come and visit and see if you can find someone's constellation... it is quite tricky! And remember to also see if you can spot Matariki in the sky soon too!

Awesome Chocolate Sellers

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

THANK YOU to everyone in Room 14 that sold chocolates!

Your hard work helped us win 2nd top class in the school for chocolate sales... with money raised helping us to buy sports uniforms and classroom games!!

You're all AWESOME!

Weekly Journal Writing

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

Every Friday we record in our journals many of the exciting activities we have been involved in that week.

It has been great to look back at the start of our journals and see how much neater our writing has become (for some of us!) or how we can now put more details into our written work.

We love it when someone writes back to us too!

And altogether as a band!

We think the giggles and laughter make this band sound PERFECT!

Listen to the sounds our instruments can make

Here's a video clip showing all the different sounds our homemade recycled instruments can make... aren't we clever!

Bug Hunting

Armed with ipads Room 14 were off in search of bugs in the school gardens!
We found a BIG spider, some slaters, snails ( and a tiny empty snail shell), some slimy slugs and quite a few different beetles and other bugs!

Our beans are growing!

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

Each week we record in our bean diary the growth of our beans. There is quite a range in sizes! For some we can only see some roots sprouting and others have a strong tall shoot! Why do you think some of our bean plants have grown better than others?

Music to our ears!!!

Created using Pic Collage. http://pic-collage.com

What fun we have had creating musical instruments from recycled products! And oh the "BEAUTIFUL" music we made altogether! If you made an instrument why not post a comment about how you made it so others could have a go too!
